Sam WOLFE's Warehouse Communion

Building community one rave at a time

Worship in the house of techno

For Atlanta-based techno chart-topper Sam WOLFE, every show is a massive hangout—a space where old and new friends come together to connect through the power of music. This perspective grounds him, keeping his purpose at the forefront each time he plays. This time, Morning Choir brought Sam’s latest ‘hangout’ to life at The Fruit in Durham, North Carolina, shaking the walls of the packed warehouse venue.

EMELCiE (a clever phonetic reimagining of her initials, MLC) was first at the decks, taking the audience on a journey from minimal tech to tech house and everything in between. This Raleigh-based artist likes to pack her sets with little sonic surprises—eclectic choices that grab your attention throughout. Through the dark, foggy warehouse space, she crafted a dark, sultry atmosphere with the music, cut through by cheers and whistles from an enthusiastic crowd. The EMELCiE project, launched just over a year ago, has already taken off, and she’s only getting started. A fresh face in techno, she hopes to continue to grow her skills behind the decks as well as delve into production. Still a musical theater kid at heart, she would love to produce a Cell Block Tango remix worthy of the hottest dancefloor.

Sam WOLFE took to the stage next, ready to share an energetic 3 hours of music with his friends in attendance. Eighty percent of what he played consisted of original music and his own edits of music he loves, personalizing each track with his unique flavor. It’s been a whirlwind five years for the artist, but after taking a break to start a family he’s back and continuing his reign of the American techno scene.

In a newly revamped space, Sam cranked the sound up, sending thumping bass and striking rhythms through the room as people danced between the bright strobing light bars cutting through the air. Whether it was hakken, salsa, or a basic two-step, ravers in the room moved expressively, a beautiful fusion of cultures and influences peppering the warehouse floor. His peak-time techno grooves kept pace as the hours went on, supplying the energy with loud and aggressive tracks.

A night with Sam Wolfe is one you'll never forget

As the night wrapped up, the crowd—still buzzing from Sam WOLFE’s enduring set—drifted out of the warehouse and dispersed into the night. Some might cross paths again and some might never, but for one night, everyone shared a special bond—becoming a part of the special community Sam builds with his music.
